April 13, 1973 ~ R&B, vocal R&B group the Spinners release One Of A Kind (Love Affair), lifted off their eponymous Spinners album ~ The band were on a roll, their eponymous Spinners album, the first for Atlantic Records, producing three consecutive Billboard R&B charttopppers with I'll Be Around, Could It Be I'm Falling In Love, and One Of A Kind (Love Affair). Upon its release, One Of A Kind (Love Affair), however, did cause some controversy when the lyrics were thought to contain a curse word. In the section following the instrumental break, it sounded as if Philippé Wynne sang “one of a kind love affair, makes you want to love her, you just got to f-ck her, yeah”, while others thought the line to be “you just got to hug her”. Atlantic Records quickly responded to the complaints, and reissued the single with the three lines edited out. The album, released in 1979, would reach top 10 in the band's native UK, and was the band's first to crack the top 30 on the American Billboard Hot 200 album chart. Associated with several labels over the course of his career, notably Sue Records and Island Records, other acts produced by Stevens include Alex Harvey, Larry Williams, Lee Dorsey, and Hapshash & the Coloured Coat, with Stevens also serving as the latter's manager. Lowe, known to friends as “Duff”, was present on the recordings of That'll Be The Day and In Spite Of All The Danger, for which he retained ownership. During the 1960s, Marshall backed artist such as Charlie Mariano, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Stan Getz, and Sam Rivers. Toured with Dionne Warwick. Member of 1960s fusion outfit the Fourth Way, 1970s unit Almanac, and of 1980s group Bebop & Beyond, the latter known for a string of tribute albums to the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. Marshall has also appeared on albums by Smiley Winters, John Klemmer, the Pointer Sisters (Pointer Sisters), Red Garland, Jon Hendricks, Art Pepper, Bobby Hutcherson, Eddie Harris (Tale Of Two Cities), Archie Shepp, and Freddie Hubbard, and taught at the San Francisco School of the Arts, San Francisco. First to record Let Me Go Devil, penned by Jenny Lou Carson inspired by Hank Williams' battle with alcoholism and premature death.
